Episode 1: Luna
The Yew Grows Five Branches
And a star is born . . .
As you all know, New York City, as we know her today with the five boroughs, was born on Saturday, January 1, 1898, precisely at midnight. The act of consolidation was not fully supported and is still a topic of heated debate. Gotham had no say in the matter. What she did have access to was a wave, an energetic silver bullet with the power to turn her into a bright and shining star. We just happen to have a map of that wave. It’s called a birth chart, or in this case an event chart. But, since we will be talking about our lady Gotham as a sentient being, we are using it as a birth chart. As with all sentient beings, at the moment of birth, (or rebirth in Gotham’s case), all of the energies within the wave were imprinted in the heavens leaving us an accurate, detailed description of her desires, needs, potential, and destiny. This map shows us all of the waters to be crossed, mountains to be climbed or skirted, and whether the path is smooth and straight, or rough and winding. But it also shows us the fastest possible way of getting from point A to point B, point B being glory. Getting Gotham to glory is the primary purpose of this series, are you listening Mayor? Not glory, as in the egomaniac desiring accolades sense. I am talking glory as in reaching one’s highest, purest, most balanced state in an imperfect and unbalanced world, leaving a lasting legacy for all of humanity. We are all capable of it. (We really gotta work on eradicating those contronym’s. They’re the real super villains.)
Luna, a Goddess in Disguise
Hey baby, what’s your moon sign?
Despite modern convention, the Sun sign is the not the most important thing in the natal chart. The moon is where we need to divert our gaze. Every other heavenly body exists to serve Luna.
Think about it. The moon doesn’t revolve around the sun per se. The moon revolves around and with the Earth. The moon is freaky. She is close enough for us to visit. Unlike other moons in the solar system, she keeps a PERFECT circular orbit around the Earth. And she is locked onto Earth’s orbit by an invisible tether, therefore always facing us directly, never showing us her back side. This weird rotational dance, makes it appear as if she is moving really, really fast. From our perspective, the moon is changing signs daily, and way more rapidly than any other celestial body. Without the moon, some scientists conclude that humanity would not exist. The forces of nature would be so violent and chaotic, without Luna, we wouldn’t stand a chance. Luna loves the Earth, and Luna loves us.
The moon is a pure representation of the primordial feminine. She represents the dream, the void, the nothingness, the zero-point field, the One, the all, whatever name you want to attach to it.
In the natal chart, she represents the dreams we want to materialize in this Earth walk. And this is why Luna and her Nodes are so important.
In Gotham’s chart, Luna is at 26° Aries in Station 7. Luna here wants to lead. In the late degrees of Aries, she wants to be a master of leadership, a leader of leaders, specifically in the area of symbiotic partnerships.
She wants to show the world new ways of forming partnerships and new types of partnerships. She wants us to see the power of symbiotic partnerships and understand their importance. And she wants the world to follow her lead.
Luna is the dreamer. Passive. All she need do, is dream her dream. It will take Sol’s rays, to spark her dream into something real. With the warmth of Sol’s love and affection, Luna is able to sustain her children through her North Node. Without the light of the Sun, Luna starves, her children starve, and the dream slowly, quietly fades away. So you can see, our modern way of looking at nurture and protect in the astro chart, is a bit wonky. Luna and Sol are both active in these abilities, in different ways. Luna is the protector and the nurturer of the children of the Earth. Sol is the protector and nurturer of Luna’s dream. Luna’s North Node acts as the umbilical cord—our lifeline, our survival. If Luna starves, we starve.
Where Luna resides in the birth chart by house and by sign, and who her friends are, will give you hints to your soul’s deepest desires. There is a good possibility you’ve forgotten them. The culture in the US today is one of division, we are starved of acceptance. In order to survive, we have a way of contorting our desires to gain the acceptance we crave. Over time, we believe the lie more and more, and forget who we really are, completely divorcing ourselves from our true dreams. Meditate on Luna, her house and sign placement, and her friends, to remember. Her sign tells us what she wants. The house she is in tells us where she wants it. And her friends, tell us what the finer details of the dream are, as well as the supports and challenges we will find along the path.
Turns out, Gotham’s Luna has a lot of friends. Next week, we will find them, and see just what they need in order to help Luna along. Til then, where is Luna in your chart?
NOTE: 1) If your new to astrology, no worries if you don’t understand all the terminology and concepts just yet. Keep following along, and everything will be explained. Companion materials can be found on our Digital Downloads page.
2) If your are an astrology pro, be prepared to hear some new terminology, to practice some long forgotten methods, and to revive some methods that have just fallen out of favor because they were misunderstood.
3) The “houses” aren’t really houses and this is the last time you will here me refer to them as such. The term is confusing and muddies the waters. Houses are stations, workstations to be exact. There are twelve missions we need to accomplish to materialize Luna’s dream. We need to do exercises, practices, and questing, to complete each of the missions. Each workstation comes equipped with a guide and user’s manual, containing the keys to its mission, and all of the directions we need.
4) To run your own chart and follow along, you will need an accurate birth place and time. Charts can be printed for free at astro.com. We are using the Placidus House system. Here are the detailed instructions for how to print your chart.
